How we test our meditation cushion
Every number on this site comes from something we can measure, sit on, wash, or count. This page lays out exactly what we check on the StillSeat cushion and what would make us rewrite a page.
We test one product: a round meditation cushion measuring 40 cm across and 6 cm thick. We verify those measurements with a tape measure, judge firmness through daily sitting, machine wash the linen cover at 30°C to confirm zero deformation, and track all 45 verified buyer reviews, which currently average 4.9 out of 5.
We measure what we sell
The spec sheet says 40 cm by 6 cm, so we put a tape measure on it. Across the top seam, the cushion measures 40 cm (15.7 in) in diameter. Laid flat and unloaded, it stands 6 cm (2.36 in) thick. Both numbers match the listing, which is why they appear on the meditation cushion homepage as measured figures rather than quoted ones. If a supplier sheet and our tape measure ever disagree, the tape measure wins and the page changes.
Hands-on numbers: diameter 40 cm (15.7 in) and thickness 6 cm (2.36 in), both confirmed with a tape measure. The foam core reads firm on the first sit and does not bottom out under a seated adult. One verified buyer summed up the firmness test better than we could: "Good material, hard pillow, just what I wanted."
We sit on it daily
Firmness claims are easy to type and hard to fake in practice, so the core test is simply Rachel Bennett's daily sits: cross-legged in the morning, seiza when working at a low table. We watch for three failures. Does the foam bottom out and let your sit bones reach the floor? Does the cushion slide on hardwood when you shift your weight? Does the front edge collapse when you sit toward it, which is the position most people actually use? So far the core holds its 6 cm height through a full sit, and that is exactly what buyers mean when they call it a hard pillow. If the position itself is the hard part, how to sit on a meditation cushion walks through cross-legged, seiza, and side-sitting setups.
We machine wash the cover
The removable cover is one of the main reasons to buy this seat over a sewn-shut floor pillow, so it has to earn the claim. We unzip the linen-blend cover, run it through a cool 30°C (86°F) machine cycle, air dry it, and put it back on. We then check that the cover shows zero deformation and fits the foam without bagging, that the zipper still runs cleanly from end to end, that the gold lotus embroidery is intact, and that the color has not faded next to an unwashed reference.
We recount the reviews
The 4.9/5 rating on this site is not a badge we copied from anywhere. We keep all 45 verified reviews on file and recalculate the average from the individual ratings: 41 five-star and 4 four-star reviews, which works out to 4.9 out of 5. The 4-star reviews stay published on the verified reviews page because they say useful things, mostly that the cushion is harder than people expected and that one arrived with a slight dent. When new verified reviews come in, the count and the average get updated together.
What we score
Four criteria decide whether this cushion keeps its place on our pages.
- Seat stability. The cushion must give a level, planted feel on hard floors and on rugs, without rocking or sliding during weight shifts.
- Foam recovery. After daily sitting, the high-density core must return to its 6 cm height instead of developing a permanent hollow.
- Zipper quality. The zipper must run smoothly, hold its pull tab, and survive repeated wash cycles without separating or snagging the linen.
- Embroidery stitching. The gold lotus stitching must stay intact through washing and daily contact, with no lifted or loose threads.
These are the same criteria we apply when comparing seat types in the best meditation cushion guide and in our meditation cushion vs bench article.
The guarantee behind the method
Testing reduces the risk, and the return policy removes the rest of it. Every order ships free in the US, dispatches within 1-2 business days, arrives in 8-10 business days, and carries 30-day free returns, detailed on our refund policy page. If the cushion you receive does not match what we describe here, send it back.
The results of this testing run through the whole site: the meditation cushion set page applies them to the 2-pack and 3-pack, while the yoga meditation cushion and floor pillows for sitting pages cover the other ways buyers use the same seat.
